In May 2013, the Alabama Legislature created a state historic preservation income tax credit for owners who rehabilitate residential or commercial properties.
This program offered a tax credit of up to 25% for the substantial rehabilitation of a historic residential or commercial property. Twenty million dollars in tax credits were available from 2013-2015, for a total of $60 million. Commercial projects could receive the credit for up to $5 million in qualified expenses, and private residential properties up to $50,000.
A summary of the program, its legislation and regulations, and its application forms can be found below.
Since the program expired in May 2016 the AHC can no longer accept new applications. However, we continue to work with those entities who have received a tax credit reservation between 2013-2015.
